Prospective Elementary Teacher

I am a junior at Appalachian State University where I am majoring in Elementary Education with a concentration in Spanish.  This website is intended to be a professional portfolio, displaying some of the work I have done in preparation for becoming a teacher.

Teaching Experience

Volunteer Experience

This semester, I am performing a teaching internship at Sawmills Elementary School in Granite Falls, NC.  I am working in Ms. Woodruff's 3rd Grade class. Some of the types of things I will be doing in the classroom are: leading small-group activities; working one-on-one with students who need extra help; doing read-alouds or helping with other classroom routines; observing lessons; helping to plan lessons and activities; and helping with assessment.  Prior to this, I was a nursery attendant for four years at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Raleigh; last summer I worked as a summer camp counselor for the Pre X-Press program at Marsh Creek Community Center in Raleigh; and last fall, I assisted with the afterschool program at Newland Elementary School in Newland.

  • Assisted in the Turtles (6 months-2yrs), Tadpoles (2-3yrs), Frogs (3-4yrs), and Monkeys (4-5yrs) classrooms, and worked in the office, at the School of Grace Preschool in Raleigh as part of a service learning experience for my Teaching English Language Learners class (Spring 2016).  I spent one day working in each of the classrooms and one day working in the office.  I helped with setting up the classroom at the beginning of the school day, assisted the teachers and students throughout the school day both in the classroom and on the playground, and helped to clean up the classroom at the end of the school day.  In the office, I helped label and shelve books in the school library.

  • Helped lead a class of Pre-K students and a class of Kindergarten students at the Hardin Park Science Day as part of a service learning experience for my Environmental Literacy class (Fall 2015).  I worked at the Hardin Park Science Day from 10:30-12:00.  I worked first with a group of Pre-K students, and then with a group of kindergarten students, helping with a lesson about compost and worms.  I put worms and dirt on petri dishes for the students to observe, asked students questions to assist their observations, helped the students operate the microscopes in order to look at the worms and dirt more closely, and put the worms, dirt, and petri dishes away when everything was over.  With the pre-K students, we talked about both worms and compost, reading the book Compost Stew as part of the conclusion to the lesson.  With the kindergarten students we focused more closely on the worms, and on the differences between living and non-living things.

  • Helped clean up a section of the Watauga River at Guy Ford as part of a service learning experience for my Environmental Literacy class (Fall 2015).  I was assigned to clean up along the side of the road near the river, along with some other members of the class. Other class members were split up into groups cleaning up along the river and along some trails in the area.

  • Read picture books to and did crafts with a group of 4-year-olds during their field trip to the Reich College of Education at Appalachian State University (Fall 2015)

  • Ran a science activity during Buildfest at Parkway Elementary School in Boone, NC (Spring 2015)

  • Helped children from Kindergarten to 3rd grade with homework and supervised them on the playground at the afterschool program at Newland Elementary School (Fall 2014)

  • Tested children during the Pre-K Screening at Hardin Park Elementary School in Boone, NC (Spring 2014)

  • Served food to children and their parents and assisted children with crafts at an Angel Tree Party in the Reich College of Education at Appalachian State University (Fall 2013, Fall 2014, Fall 2015)

  • Supervised children during a Parents’ Night Out at the Children’s Playhouse in Boone, NC (Fall 2013, Spring 2014)

  • Read picture books to and played games with a group of 1st graders during their field trip to the Reich College of Education at Appalachian State University (Fall 2013)

  • Ran the Scooter Races game at the Hardin Park Elementary School Fall Festival in Boone, NC (Fall 2013)

  • Supervised children, set up and cleaned up crafts and other activities at a Summer Day-camp, School of Grace Preschool, Raleigh, NC (3 Days, Summer 2013)

  • Tested children during the Kindergarten Jump Start Program, Springfield Estates Elementary School, Springfield, VA (Summer 2012)

About Me

Career Goals

I plan to become an elementary school teacher (preferably working in Kindergarten, First Grade, or Second Grade).  Alternatively, I am considering working as a Reading Specialist in an elementary school.  I plan to teach in North Carolina, since this is my home state (preferably in Wake County or Mecklenburg County).  I will graduate from college with my bachelor's degree May 2017, and am planning to complete my masters' degree by the end of Summer 2018, so I would be available for hire starting in Fall 2018.

Technology Resume:

I am a junior at Appalachian State University where I am majoring in Elementary Education with a concentration in Spanish.  Once I get my BS, I am planning to master in Reading Education.  I am a member of the Appalachian Community of Education Scholars and Appalachian Educators—two service organizations for prospective teachers—and the Prose Committee for The Peel (the ASU literary magazine).  I am First Aid, CPR, and AED Certified for Adults, Children, and Infants. I have been inspired to become a teacher by the amazing teachers who I had when I was in elementary school, by my aunt who is also an elementary school teacher, and by my mother who is a preschool teacher.  When I was little, I used to play “teacher” with my younger sister, and I have always enjoyed sharing the things that I have learned with others.

Some interesting facts about me:

  • I love animals, and my favorite wild animals are giraffes, jaguars, and foxes.

  • I have two pet rabbits named Sir Kay and Sir Lancelot, and a pet parakeet named Tulip.

  • My favorite color is black.

  • I enjoy reading books, watching movies, knitting, hiking, camping, and going to museums.

  • I have traveled to England, Scotland, Ecuador (where I snorkeled with sharks in the Galapagos Islands), Spain, and Austria (mostly Vienna), as well as several states in the US.

  • My favorite season is summer, because I like warm weather, but I also enjoy the snow.
